MANCHESTER, CT – Sophomore captain Stacey Lambert (Lebanon) scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game and Kailee Doerfler (Tolland) scored the game winner with 3:45 remaining as Manchester CC beat Springfield Tech 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in Manchester.
The Cougars, who started the season with ten consecutive losses, have won two straight at home against Region 21, Division III opponents. MCC beat Massasoit CC 2-1 on Monday.
“We are playing with more confidence,” MCC head coach Jeremy Wilson said. “They never let their heads drop and continue to work hard. A little bit of confidence goes a long way .”
Lambert, who has been a force in the midfield over both of her seasons at MCC, tied the game at 1-1 with a bomb from 35-yards out. STCC goalkeeper Amal Al-Mona got a piece of it, but the ball had too much momentum and rolled over the line, just out of her reach.
“I can’t say enough good things about her,” Wilson said of Lambert. “That might be her first goal of her career – she has been playing center back her whole life. She got forward and had a chance to hit one and got all of it.”
Doerfler’s goal was more of the grind-it-out variety.
“Kailee got herself a yard of space and fought the girl off,” Wilson said describing the game winner. “She was getting hacked and fouled and grabbed and pulled, but she stayed stong and caught just enough of it to get I by the keeper.”
Danielle Hebert (Mansfield) made five saves for MCC (2-10), including one with the score tied late in the second half.
“She stood up and did a good job in the end and making that save to keep it tied,” Wilson said of his goalkeeper. “And we were able to go up the other end and get the winner.”
Emily LaFeur gave STCC (4-8) a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the game and keepers Al-Mona and Alyssa Flemati did a nice job keeping their team in the game as MCC controled the ball most of the game.
