Tutoring Center Earns International Certification
Manchester, Conn., – (February 23, 2009) . . . Manchester Community College’s Academic Support Center, formerly the College Learning Center, has been internationally certified at Level I by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). The international certification authorizes the college’s Tutoring Center to certify tutors that have completed the CRLA-certified Level 1 training program.
The following individuals from MCC received certification: Vickie Armstrong of Bolton, Laura Costa of Tariffville, Esther Cotton of South Windsor, Aaron Dowden of East Hartford, Carol Flanagan of Windsor, Elizabeth Foley of Manchester, Karen Frost of Bolton, Donnasue Graesser of North Windham, Daryn Kjellquist of South Windsor, Barry Lazlo of Manchester, Robert Maio of Hebron, Molly Mitzman of Putman, Juan Ochoa of Manchester, Aldo Peracchio of South Windsor, Thomas Petersen of South Windsor, Juanda Simons of Rocky Hill, Andrew Sottile of Storrs, Brian Sward of East Hartford, Sara Therrien of Rocky Hill, and Carly Williams of Storrs.
“This has been a collaborative process that has involved many people,” Florence Sheils, director of the Center for Student Development. Each tutor participated in a two-hour orientation, followed by eight hours of follow-up training based on The Master Tutor: A Guidebook for More Effective Tutoring, and The Bedford Guide for College Writers. “Several tutors have indicated that this training has increased their skills and their ability to provide students with the tools needed to succeed at the college level,” stated Sheils.
CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, and tutorial services at the college/adult level. CRLA is inherently diverse in membership. CRLA’s most vital function and overall purpose is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods, and information to improve student learning and to facilitate the professional growth of its members.
