Scholarship Support Helps Dean’s List Student Pursue His Dream
As the May 1 date of Manchester Community College’s biggest fundraiser, Evening of Fine Wines, approaches, MCC students are looking ahead to the end of another successful semester – many with the support of scholarship funding that the MCC Foundation is able to provide thanks to the annual event. Tickets to Evening of Fine Wines are still available.
Representative of the caliber of student relying on scholarships is Phillip Hylton, who left his native Jamaica to start his education in the United States.
He goes out of his way to point out that Manchester Community College “is a great foundation to further my education down the road.” Hylton hopes to transfer to Harvard to complete his bachelor’s degree and then on to earn his MBA. “I would love to gain experience as a marketing manager and investment banker, and start my own investment firm and lecture,” he said.
While his transition to life in the U.S. – leaving his family in Jamaica – was not an easy one, he cites not only the support of a family friend who lives in Connecticut in making the move a little smoother, but also the support of the donors who made his scholarships possible. “It was never an option not to get a college education. I was going to get it no matter what it took,” Hylton said.
His current cumulative GPA is 3.67, with an anticipated graduation date of May 2016. With a year to go, he stresses that he is grateful for the kind of support that makes such a big difference to himself and hundreds of other deserving students who rely on financial assistance to continue their education.
Evening of Fine Wines is a unique event that involves participation from all parts of the college including faculty, staff, students, MCC alumni and the community. The event features wine tasting and live and silent auctions, as well as food provided by MCC culinary students.
