Sagay’s 22 points and 14 rebounds leads to another MCC win
MANCHESTER -Ericka Sagay (Bloomfield) had 22 points and 14 rebounds as Manchester Community College beat Bristol CC 73-29 in a Region 21, Division III game Tuesday night at the Great Path Academy gym.
Sagay, who also had eight blocks, scored the first eight points of the game as MCC (14-2) took 14-0 lead and never looked back.
“The last couple of games she has been doing what she needs to do,” MCC Assistant Coach Katie McClelland said of Sagay. “Double-double, triple-doubles, she is just progressing on that.
The 6’2” Sagay turned in her second consecutive game with 20 or more points. She has hit double figures in rebounds in her last three games and has 18 blocks in her previous two. In Sunday’s game, which was for the ages, Sagay had 20 boards in a dramatic 58-51 win over Southern Maine CC that saw the Cougars come back from a 19-point half-time deficit.
“We are trying to run more and play together more,” Sagay said. “We are coming along. We are working together more on our defense and it’s helping our offense.”
Sophomore Amanda Colon (New Britain) had 14 points, including four three-pointers over a 3:18 span in the second half and Captain Erika Murphy (Torrington) had 14 points.
“She can shoot,” McClelland said of Colon, who along with Murphy, are the only holdovers from MCC’s 2008-09 team. “She sets up and gets that good pass, which I think Mikal (Mitchell) really helped with.”
Mitchell (Windsor) played her first game since December 22nd and added a burst of speed to the lineup. Having Mitchell back “really helped our fast break and put Tyra (Brooks/Waterbury) back at the three, which is really more her spot, “McClelland added.
Jazlynn Canino (East Hartford) had six rebounds and five blocks for the Cougars. Angela Roellke led Bristol with eight points.
