Regional Lottery to Fill Ninth Grade Class at Great Path Academy
Manchester, CT – May 11, 2012 . . . The state will hold a second school choice lottery to fill more than 500 magnet school seats in Greater Hartford to help meet mandates under the Sheff v. O’Neill desegregation agreement.
Recently approved magnet programs for 2012-13, including an expanded opportunity at Great Path Academy on the campus of Manchester Community College, created many of the slots. Eighty seats have been set aside in the first-ever freshman class at Great Path Academy. Currently, Great Path Academy has more than 250 students enrolled in grades 10 through 12.
Great Path Academy, a middle college high school established in 2002, is an inter-district magnet school. It offers students an educational experience that bridges the gap between high school and college by providing opportunities to enroll in college classes. The school is designed to provide an exceptional and innovative learning environment that helps students from diverse backgrounds develop the skills and knowledge needed for success in post-secondary education.
According to MCC Dean of Student Affairs and member of the Great Path Academy Governing Board Dr. G. Duncan Harris, “The college is excited about expanding this opportunity to the families of 80 ninth-graders that will be added this fall. Our goal is to assure that our students have the requisite skills to perform well once they reach college and to increase college-going and completion rates. In fact, 98% of our graduates enroll in college.”
May 25 is the deadline for families to submit an application for this unique educational opportunity to the state Regional School Choice Office. Applications are available at http://www.choiceeducation.org or at the Regional School Choice Office, 165 Capitol Ave., Room 270, in Hartford.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. MCC is situated on a park-like campus and is easily accessible from I-84.
