Physics Professor Recognized for Excellence in Teaching
President Gena Glickman presents the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award to Dr. Negussie Tirfessa.
The 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award at Manchester Community College has been awarded to Manchester resident Dr. Negussie Tirfessa, associate professor of physics.
The Manchester Community College Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes and honors a teacher who demonstrates excellence in the classroom and beyond. The program recognizes teachers who have inspired a love for learning in their students and who distinguished themselves in the classroom and in the College community.
The award was presented by President Gena Glickman to Dr. Tirfessa at the College’s Opening Day Workshop in August. The award was based on nominations solicited from current MCC students, faculty and staff.
The nomination for Dr. Tirfessa included the following comment from a student:
“I could tell from the first day this class stood apart. Rather than giving a broad overview, laboring over the syllabus, assuming students didn’t have the book, only to be let out early, this professor launched right into the subject; forcing us to actively be engaged from the very first minutes. In each and every class I was forced to think, predict and utilize logic I wasn’t even able to articulate yet.”
Dr. Tirfessa earned undergraduate degrees in Physics at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from Ohio State University. He has been a member of the faculty at Manchester Community College for over eight years.
