Phi Theta Kappa Chapter at MCC Wins Regional Awards
Manchester, CT – (March 21, 2007) . . . The Alpha Upsilon Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Manchester Community College was recognized for outstanding achievement and earned eight awards at the Phi Theta Kappa New England Regional Convention held March 9 through 11 in Newport, RI.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges that recognizes and encourages academic achievement. It provides opportunities for growth and development through participation in scholarship, leadership, and service activities.
The chapter was presented the Five Star award, which recognizes success in the highest level of the international competition, and the Continued Excellence award, which is given to chapters who have earned the Five Star Award at least three consecutive years. This is the fourth successive year that the chapter attained the Five Star award and the second year to receive the Continued Excellence award.
They also earned the Pinnacle Platinum award for increasing membership; the Spirit award, which is awarded to the chapter that contributes the most to the Phi Theta Kappa fellowship at the regional convention; the Hallmark awards for leadership and service; and Outstanding awards for the chapter’s yearbook, newsletter and website.
Currently, there are 142 members of Phi Theta Kappa at MCC. The chapter has inducted 1,699 members since spring 1991. Phi Theta Kappa has recognized academic excellence in the two-year college since 1918. Membership is based primarily upon academic achievement. Invitation to membership may be extended only by the local chapter at the institution in which the student is enrolled.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
