NJCAA D3 World Series: Gloucester Sends MCC To Losers Bracket
Cougars Will Face Montgomery College in Rematch of ’09 Series Opener
TYLER, TX – Mike Ney struck out nine over seven innings and leadoff hitter Ronny Tanner had four RBI as Gloucester CC (41-2) beat Manchester CC (29-22)10-2 in the NJCAA Division III World Series Sunday afternoon at Mike Carter Field in Tyler, TX.
Kevin Wallace had two of Manchester’s four hits, including a two-run single in the top of the second inning that gave the Cougars a short lived 2-0 lead.
“He threw strikes, kept us off balance a little bit,” MCC head coach Chris Strahowski said of Ney (10-0) who retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced. “We put good swings on the ball, hit five or six balls right on the button, but right at people.”
Gloucester pushed home four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added an unearned run in the fifth. The Roadrunners chased Cougar starter Tyler Wenz with three runs in the sixth and applied the mercy rule (eight-run lead after seven innings) on Tanner’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Cougars made three errors after playing flawless defense in their 9-5 victory over Riverland CC on Saturday and paid for it.
“We had a little bit of a breakdown and against a team like that, you can’t give them extra outs,” Strahowski said.
MCC will play Montgomery College-Germantown (MD) on Monday, May 24, at noon. A year ago, the Gryphons stunned the Cougars with two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to take a 7-6 victory in the first game of the 2009 Series. Montgomery (33-23) beat Waubonsee Community College (34-26) 10-2 earlier Sunday in an elimination game.
