Monaco Ford Gift Helps MCC Create Veteran-II-Veteran Peer Mentorship Program
MANCHESTER, Conn. (November 11, 2015) – MCC formally launched a new program Tuesday, November 10, to help support area veterans seeking to pursue an education at the college, as representatives of the college accepted a gift of $20,000 from Glastonbury-based Monaco Ford.
Chrissy Monaco presented the check, which provides seed money for the Veteran-II-Veteran Peer Mentorship program, at a ceremony attended by student veterans, faculty and staff, and Connecticut State Senator Stephen Cassano ’68 and State Representative Prasad Srinivasan. MCC’s Veteran-II-Veteran Peer Mentorship program (V-II-V) is designed to assist veterans and service members with their transition to MCC and to foster a connection with faculty, staff and students through a structured peer mentoring system. V-II-V comprises four components to help veteran students succeed at MCC: peer mentoring; academic support and recognition; community engagement and service; and leadership development.
Keith Barile, a U.S. Army veteran and a student in MCC’s Drug and Alcohol Recovery Counselor (DARC) program, serves as one of three V-II-V mentors, along with Michelle LaBelle, U.S. Army and an MCC business major, and Tim Rohde, also U.S. Army, and a student in general studies. Barile spoke on behalf of the program.
