MCC’s Youth Programs Expands Technology and Theatre Summer Courses
Manchester Community College’s Excursions in Learning Youth Programs Summer 2015 catalog is now available online. Classes are open for registration with 35 course options for exciting new learning opportunities for creative, gifted and highly-motivated students in grades K to 10.
One new program that will be offered is a Junior Technology Camp for students in grades 2 to 4, which runs from July 6 to 17. Course topics include engineering, math, robotics and science taught in hands-on, innovative ways.
For example, Design, Build, Challenge is a basic introduction to the field of engineering using principles of physics, building with wheels, axels, gears, levers and pulleys.
Another new course, Cooking with Math, will engage students in a combination of classroom and kitchen lessons to explore concepts that include measurement, fractions, symmetry, arithmetic, algebra and geometry.
Intro to Lego Robotics will teach students about robotics and engineering by building a Lego robot and programming it to perform and meet daily challenges.
Little Scientists: Experiments throughout History will strengthen students’ understanding of the scientific method by conducting experiments that replicate the great scientific and mathematical minds of history. Students will have fun and be challenged to utilize computer science to document and present scientific findings.
In addition, back by popular demand is the program’s summer Theatre Camp. After the success of the program’s hip-hop interpretation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Excursions in Learning students in grades 3 to 8 can produce and act in The Tempest: a Hip-Hop Production. Theatre Camp is a full-day, two-week program running August 3 to 14. It combines contemporary music, dance and acting. All levels of dancers and actors are invited to develop their talents.
