MCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Named A Four Star Chapter

Manchester, CT – (September 6, 2012) . . . The Alpha Upsilon Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Manchester Community College was recently named a “Four Star Chapter” during the New England Regional Convention.

The Five Star Chapter Development Plan, which serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter, improves student engagement on campus and recognizes progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter. Using the Five Star plan as a guide, chapters enhance strategies to recognize eligible students, provide significant personal and professional development opportunities for members and build a working relationship with the college administration by becoming active on campus and in the community.

As chapters reach these milestones, they progress through each level of the plan to ultimately reach the pinnacle Five Star level.

Phi Theta Kappa, an internationally acclaimed honor society, has recognized academic excellence in the two-year college since 1918. Membership is based primarily upon academic achievement. Invitation to membership may be extended only by the local chapter at the institution in which the student is enrolled.

The purpose of the Alpha Upsilon Alpha chapter is to promote scholarships, develop leadership and service, and cultivate fellowship among qualified students at Manchester Community College. To be eligible for an invitation to join, a student must be currently enrolled, have accumulated 12 semester hours earned at MCC, have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.75 and adhere to the College code of conduct.

Chapter Advisors are Patrick Sullivan, Professor of English, Elaine Wiatr, Facilities Scheduler, Lucy Hurston, Professor of Social Science and Hospitality and Julie Larkin ’12, Alumni Advisor.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
