MCC’s Hall of Fame Award Honors Sergeant Cleon Moses

Manchester, CT (November 16, 2012)… Sergeant Cleon Moses ’97, a resident of East Hartford, and a summa cum laude graduate of Springfield College in 2005, was honored on Tuesday, November 13 for his long-time support of Manchester Community College at the Hall of Fame Reception. He embodies the phrase “serve and protect” and has been a member of the Manchester Police Department since 1998, climbing the ranks during this period. He is well respected by his peers on the force and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2002 and again in 2011. Sergeant Moses is committed to community police work, adopting a proactive approach when working with youth to eliminate youth violence. He is a mentor for the Manchester Youth Services Boys to Men program and plays a leadership role in the direction and success of the program.

The MCC Foundation Hall of Fame Award is an annual award given to a distinguished donor, a community activist or alumni for service to the College.

Sergeant Moses not only serves the community through his profession, but also in a voluntary capacity. He has been a long-time volunteer with the following organizations: Hartford Jazz Society, Connecticut Chapter; Men and Women for Justice; Hartford Family Day; and the Manchester Police Honor Guard. He is frequently asked to give motivational speeches to high-risk youth and gang members in Manchester and Hartford’s North End.

One of the volunteer activities he is most committed to is the MCC Foundation, and the memorial scholarship he established in honor of his grandmother, Thelma Edith Goldsmith-Valentine. Since 2003 he has held an annual fish fry fundraiser to raise money to provide scholarships to students in the business and criminal justice fields. The first award was given in Spring 2004. A total of 19 students have been awarded scholarships.

The MCC Foundation Donor Appreciation Dinner and Hall of Fame Reception was attended by over 50 donors and guests.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities.
