MCC Women’s Soccer Coach Alex Calpa Resigns

MANCHESTER- Manchester Community College Women’s soccer coach Alex Calpa has resigned after rebuilding and leading the program for five seasons.

Calpa brought the team from club status to a Region 21 contender over his five-year run, compiling an overall record of 34-25-2, including a program best 16-3 record in 2008 when they made their first-ever appearance in the Region XXI Division III Championship game. That team produced four NJCAA Division III Region XXI first team selections, the program’s first NJCAA Division III first team All-American (Goalkeeper Nicole Morehouse) and its first Academic All-American with Distinction (Julia Connor).

“MCC was my second home, but it was time to move on,” Calpa said. “I had been there for ten years combined. I was a student, played and coached for (current MCC Men’s coach) Jim (Insinga) and then five years with the Women’s program. It was time to leave the nest.”

Calpa, 34, was hired February 28, 2005 after previously serving as an assistant coach at RHAM High School. The Manchester High and MCC graduate was a member of the school’s Men’s soccer team during the 1999 and 2000 seasons and served as a player/assistant coach in 2000 under Insinga, who was in his first season at MCC. Calpa remained as an assistant on Insinga’s staff for three more years, including 2002 when the team reached the NJCAA Division III Final Four.

“To me he is like family,” MCC Director of Athletics Cynthia Washburne said of Calpa. “He has done a great job building the program and is an excellent soccer coach – running the drills, the skills and practices. I’ve seen him grow and have loved having him here. “

Calpa will continue to coach the U-14 and 15 boy’s team for the Northeast Premier program and run clinics for UConn Men’s Coach Ray Reid. He is also a staff instructor at the Ray Reid Soccer School in Storrs during the summer.

“He has a great future ahead of him and I wish him the best,” Washburne added. “We are going to miss him.”
