linda-burk-BL053615-editedManchester, Conn. (July 10, 2015) – Linda J. Burk, Ph.D., professor of Romance Languages at Manchester Community College, recently received the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award from the MCC Women’s Caucus. The award is given annually to a female faculty or staff member who has made an important contribution to the achievements of women at the college, exemplifies leadership qualities, and acts as a role model and mentor through her activities on campus.

Dr. Burk’s role in supporting the development of women at the college is significant. As co-chair of the MCC Foundation scholarship committee since 2009, she has evaluated candidates for scholarships and, although encouraging both male and female students to seek funding, she especially encourages shy or timid women students to apply as a means to help build their confidence.

Burk has also served as a mentor to newly hired women faculty members and to students and has served as faculty advisor to the Spanish Club and the Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Language Society.

“It is a great honor to be chosen as MCC Women’s Caucus Outstanding Woman of the Year,” said Burk. “I feel privileged to be a part of the difference MCC’s women faculty and staff make both on campus and within the college’s wider community.”

Her community service activity includes serving as president of the Foreign Language Consortium of the Connecticut Community Colleges since 2006, six years as a member of the Advisory Council of the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, vice president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and member of the Connecticut Organization of Language Teachers since 1985.

In addition, Burk had been an MCC Foundation board member since 2009 as well as a recent member of the foundation’s distribution committee. She has also served on committees for the College Senate, and committees governing jurisdiction, promotion, accreditation, sabbatical leave, emeritus, academic advising, dinner lecture series and Katherine D. Bourn Memorial Scholarship.
