MANCHESTER, CT – Arianna Rivera (Manchester) scored a pair of first half goals then moved to defense as Manchester (1-10) beat Massasoit CC 2-1 for its first win of the season. Rivera scored in the fifth and 29th minutes while Danielle Hebert (Mansfield) made five saves to help snap the Cougars’ ten-game losing streak.

“I felt we had to score fast and just defend the whole game. I’m so happy and so proud of them,” Rivera said of her teammates. “It was our first win and it feels good.”

“Relief,” was among the first words spoken by MCC head coach Jeremy Wilson moments after the game. The third year coach continued with praise for his team.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” Wilson said. “They have dealt with a whole bunch of real, real hard times this year.”

Rivera, who was a starter at Manchester High last season, has been one of Wilson’s steadiest players at both end of the field through the fall. “Her pace allows us to cover some issues in the backend,” Wilson said of Rivera. “They had some speed up top, so it made sense to get her into the back to kind of lock things down.”

Jessica McAlpine scored in the 25th minute to tie the game at 1-1 and Kristen Reardon made three saves for Massasoit (4-6).
Wilson’s team suffered double digit losses on two occasions in September and entered the game having scored just five goals over ten games, but have shown perserverence and steady improvement thoughout the season.

“They have had some real difficult moments and real difficult games,” Wilson added. “They have always come back and always worked hard. Every single day in training they have their heads up, they are ready. I give full credit to them. They did a great job today.”

MCC hosts Springfield Tech on Wednesday at 4PM.
