MCC takes a pair of Region 21 games at Bunker Hill 7-0, 6-1

BOSTON – (April 19, 2009) Steve Simon (Middlefield) and John White (Rockville) each pitched complete games as Manchester CC swept Bunker Hill CC 7-0 and 6-1 in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Boston.

Simon (4-0) struck out six without walking a batter over seven innings and White (3-0) induced 16 of 21 outs by ground ball, including four double-plays. Both pitchers threw an economical 75 pitches.

Juan Bisono (New Britain) was 5 for 7 with three rbi, a double, a triple and a stolen base on the day for the Cougars (15-12-1). The second baseman was also involved in all four MCC double-plays. Nick Melino (Cromwell) was 4 for 6 with four runs scored and two rbi as MCC improved to 6-2 in Region 21, Division III play.

“We played a couple of good teams,” MCC Head Coach Chris Strahowski said after sweeping weekend doubleheaders from Massasoit CC on Saturday and Bunker Hill on Sunday. “We were able to put together 14 innings each day where we didn’t make many mistakes and our pitchers threw a lot of strikes.” MCC starters completed three of the four weekend games, rebounding from a one-side loss on Friday afternoon at Holyoke CC.

Vin Sommo (Clinton) had a double and a two-run triple in Sunday’s second game while Herb Coggeshall had two hits and two rbi in game one.

Bunker Hill falls to 11-8 overall and 5-2 within the division. MCC travels to Bridgeport Tuesday afternoon for a non-league game against University of Bridgeport’s JV team before returning home to host Holyoke CC in a division game Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
