MCC Sweeps MassBay CC in Region 21 Division III Doubleheader
MANCHESTER – Manchester CC received complete games from Tyler Wenz (Ogdensburg, NJ) and Adam Scanlon (South Windsor) in a Region 21, Division III doubleheader sweep of MassBay CC Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars won the first game 12-3 and the second 11-0 in five innings (Mercy Rule).
“I think the guys are starting to get that killer instinct where they see a game they can put away and they to put it away, “Manchester CC head coach Chris Strahowski said.
Sunday’s doubleheader at UConn-Avery Point was rained out.
A. J. Lowers (Newington) was 5 for 7 on the afternoon with five runs scored, three doubles and three RBI for MCC (24-17,12-2). Joey Allison (East Hartford) went 5 for 8 with a double and triple and four runs scored in the Cougars sixth sweep of the season.
Wenz (1-4) found himself down 2-0 before his team came to bat, but the sophomore battled through a some defensive lapses to pick up his first win of the season. The sophomore captain scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked three. He also hit two batters.
“He threw real well,” Strahowski said of Wenz. “We finally got him off the hook with his first win. The kid should have four or five wins at this point, but the guys came out swinging for him which was nice.”
Scanlon (5-2) allowed four hits – all singles, struck out five and walked two. Catcher Kevin Wallace (Groton) threw out a pair of base runners attempting in the fourth inning of game two.
Tyler Higgins tripled and scored a run for MassBay (3-15, 2-9).
