Manchester Community College Recognized for Community Service
Manchester, CT-(March 27, 2012)… Manchester Community College has been honored as a leader among institutions of higher education for its support of volunteering, service learning, and civic engagement. The college has been admitted to the 2011 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community. There were 14 institutions of higher education in Connecticut recognized and Manchester Community College was one of two Connecticut community colleges to meet the requirements for the honor roll.
The Corporation for National and Community Service, which has administered the Honor Roll since 2006, admitted a total of 642 college and universities for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth. Of that total, 513 were named to the Honor Roll, 110 received the recognitions of Honor Roll with distinction, 14 were identified as finalists, and five received the Presidential Award. Gena Glickman, President of Manchester Community College stated “It’s an honor to be recognized for our community engagement. We are fortunate to have an active service learning program with strong faculty leadership and community support.”
Manchester Community College has a long history of community engagement, including volunteerism, civic engagement, service learning, and cultural programming and support. During the 2011-2012 year, eight Sociology classes required all of their students to participate in 15-20 hours of Service Learning. In addition, students worked with the “Cooking Matters Program” that empowers families with the skills, knowledge and confidence to prepare healthy and affordable meals. Also, 25 business students will participate in Junior Achievement Day at O’Brien Elementary School in East Hartford where MCC students will teach students about economics and business. The College has taken significant steps to formalize its community service program, align it with the institutional mission and ensure its growth, consistency and sustainability.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. MCC is situated on a park-like campus and is easily accessible from I-84.
