MCC Receives Stimulus Grant Money for Health Careers Programs

Manchester, Connecticut-(March 31, 2011)… Manchester Community College has received a Health Resource Service Administration “federal stimulus” grant of $118,000 from the 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act. Marcia Jehnings, Director of MCC’s Math, Science & Health Careers Division said ”The college is very fortunate to have received funding to purchase equipment for our allied health programs. This will enhance our training of health professionals immensely.”

The Health Careers programs at Manchester Community College will benefit directly from this grant. The money has been used to purchase sophisticated medical equipment used to diagnose and treat patients. The equipment includes two simulation mannequins that can be programmed for a variety of functions, state-of-the-art ventilators, EKG machines and a new operating room table and is the same equipment found in medical schools and nursing programs.

MCC’s nationally accredited health care technician/assistant programs evolved in response to local and state labor market needs. The Health Careers Programs include Respiratory Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Surgical Technology, Physical Therapy Assistant, Certified Nurse Aide and EMT.

Applications for admissions to these programs are being accepted for the 2012 fall semester. Almost 100% of students who graduate from the MCC Health Career Programs find jobs. The Health Career programs provide education for health-related professions that fulfill important roles in the health care system, including assisting, facilitating and complementing the work of physicians and other health care providers. Many of these health career professions were developed in the last 20-25 years in response to the rapid advancements in health care technologies.

The College received assistance from the Office of Congressman Joe Courtney in obtaining this Federal grant.
