MCC to Present African American History Month Leadership Awards

MCC’s Minority Students and Mentoring Programs will celebrate Manchester Community College’s African American History Month and its associated Leadership Awards on Thursday, February 19, 2015, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the GPA Community Commons. This year’s theme for African American History Month is “2015: A Century of Black Life, History and Culture.”

The keynote speaker will be Stephania H. Davis, associate professor of journalism. During the ceremony, MCC Leadership Awards will be presented and a reception will follow.

This year’s awardees are Regina Stallings Moye, Community Leadership Award; Endia DeCordova, College Employee Leadership Award; and Irene Darko, College Student Leadership Award.

Community Leadership Award winner Moye is a school counselor at Manchester High School for the past 10 years. A recipient of the Walter “Doc” Hurley scholarship and an All-State/All-American track competitor, she attended Virginia State University where she majored in psychology and earned a bachelor of science degree. Moye is currently earning her sixth-year professional degree at UConn and is expected to finish this May.

Employee Leadership Award winner DeCordova is the dean of development and community engagement for MCC. She is a past president and board member of the Public Relations Society of America, Connecticut Valley Chapter, and she serves on several additional councils and boards locally, including the Northeast Regional Board of the National Council on Black American Affairs, Connecticut ACE (American Council on Education) Women’s Network, the East Hartford Chamber of Commerce and Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity. She holds an M.B.A. from the University of Hartford and a bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University.

College Student Leadership Award winner Darko graduated from Rockville High School in 2013. She is a first-generation college student, and this upcoming spring will be her second year at MCC. Darko has been accepted into the Occupational Therapy Assistant program and is now double majoring with liberal arts and science. She plans to transfer to the University of Connecticut and graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biology and aspires to get into the Naturopathic Medicine program at the University of Bridgeport.
