Manchester, CT – (February 1, 2014)…MCC on Main, Manchester Community College’s Arts and Education Center, has scheduled the following events for the month of February:
February 6 – Live on Main: Jen Lowe. Join us in the Dehn Gallery for an evening with Jen Lowe, a journey-woman through and through, armed with a beaten-up backpack stuffed with sentimental keepsakes of a woman both beloved and scorned. She is a true natural performer, whether she’s pounding ferociously on a djembe or gently finger-picking her old guitar; as a multi-instrumentalist, Jen’s shows are spontaneous, fun and never predictable. February 7 – Open Studio: Life Drawing. Join us for an open figure drawing session. This will be a free-form and self-directed life drawing group. February 7 – Hans Weiss “Portraits Through Time.” An award-winning artist and portrait painter, Hans Weiss will exhibit drawings and paintings of portraits he has executed over the years. Works will explore the portraiture of well-known Connecticut figures, as well as reflect Hans’ years of international travel experience and a diverse selection of human faces and lives on canvas. February 7 – Live on Main: Them Damn Hamiltons. Newcomers to the Americana nu-folk movement, Them Damn Hamiltons blaze their own trail, writing and performing their own personal brand of dark, independent New England folk music, with a touch of gypsy swagger and sea chantey stomp. February 14 – Live on Main: Theresa Wright. Grab your sweetheart and join us in the Dehn Gallery for a night of music from Theresa Wright. An R&B and Jazz entertainer from CT, Wright will perform various genres of music from the 1930s and 1940s. Theresa has performed for the Greater Hartford Jazz Festival and worked with artists such as Jaimoe from the Allman Brothers Band, as well as, the J. Giles Band. Wine and beer available from bin228. February 19 – Beer, Burgers & Managing Your Bucks. Celebrate the spirit of National Entrepreneurship Week at our monthly networking and educational event for young professionals. Hear from a panel of local business owners as they discuss their “secrets of success.” Each with a different business model, they’ll tell their stories and share their thoughts on what it takes to succeed. Come with your questions and leave with a better sense of whether you have the mindset, motivation and skills to be your own boss. February 20 – Mishi-maya-gat Spoken Word & Music Series. Poets Christine Casson and Daniel Tobin, creative writing faculty at Emerson College. February 21 – Movies on Main: 20 Feet from Stardom. The backup singer exists in a strange place in the pop music world; they are always in the shadow of the feature artists even when they are in front of them in concert while they provide a vital foundation for the music. Through interviews with veterans and concert footage, the history of these predominately African American singers is explored through the rock era. 91 mins. Documentary. Rated PG-13. February 24 – Meditation Mondays: A Walk Through the Dehn Gallery. Join us for a walk through the gallery with Curator Maura O’Connor and a brief conversation about the role of art in community and education. Hans Weiss’ portraits will be on display. Hans is a longtime Manchester resident and gallery owner. He has been an integral member of our arts community and leading benefactor of Manchester Community College. There will be quiet time to relax and enjoy the art. Bring a bag lunch or plan a visit to a local shop on the way home.
