MCC Offers New Degree Program for Future Teachers

Manchester, Conn., – (November 19, 2008)… In an effort to address growing demands for teachers in Connecticut, Manchester Community College (MCC) has instituted a new degree program for future educators. The Pathway to Teaching associate degree program was developed to provide community college students the opportunity to transfer to Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU), into their teacher training program.

The Pathway to Teaching program is also intended to expand opportunities for minority and bicultural students, in an attempt to confront the critical shortage of minority and bilingual teachers in grades Pre-K through 12. Ultimately, this program is designed to open new doors to those who desire, and can benefit from, a college education.

“The Pathway to Teaching degree is a wonderful way for our students who are interested in becoming teachers to begin that journey,” stated Georgia Buckles, interim director of the Social Science and Hospitality division at MCC. “The direct transfer to ECSU will offer them a carefully planned, affordable route to enter the field of teaching without additional coursework or added expense.”

Students who successfully complete the Pathway to Teaching program with a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or higher, earn an associate degree and pass the Praxis I examination, will be considered for admission to the baccalaureate program at ECSU. The associate degree program at MCC consists of 62 credits.

MCC and ECSU will share academic advising responsibilities for students. Students that potentially qualify for this program include individuals currently working as paraprofessionals who wish, or are being required, to obtain an associate degree; high school graduates; individuals interested in a career change; and all students interested in a career as a teacher.
