MCC Offers Credit-Free Courses for New Year’s Resolutions
For people thinking about their 2015 New Year’s resolutions, a credit-free course through Manchester Community College’s Continuing Education division can give structure to good intentions. These and many other courses are available during the winter intersession and spring term:
Cardio Kick-Boxing Workout – Anyone with any kick-boxing skill level can attend this class. Beginners follow along with the routine and learn from watching the instructor and more experienced students. There is no person-to-person contact, and no special uniform is required. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Ongoing classes begin Mondays and Wednesdays starting Jan. 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. (refer to CRN 11599 for registration), and there are also Tuesday and Thursday classes starting Jan. 6, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; the course fee is $45 for twelve sessions. There is a $5 equipment fee payable to the instructor on the first day of class. The instructors are Elaine Flaherty, a 2nddegree Black Belt and Joel Waldron, 6th degree Black Belt, and other instructors at the Academy of Martial Arts at 440 Oakland Street, Manchester, where the course is held.
Yoga for All Levels – Yoga and meditation are life transforming practices, and Kundalini Yoga has been described as one of the most comprehensive styles to increase flexibility, clear the mind, relieve pain, trim the waistline, and promote a happy and healthy lifestyle. Each session includes a gentle, energizing, rhythmic yoga practice, followed by meditation and deep relaxation. Eight Thursdays, Jan. 15 through March 5, 6 to 7:15 p.m. (refer to CRN 11619); course fee is $115. The instructor is Kay Lani LeBoulluec, Ph.D., from the University of Vermont, who is a certified yoga instructor, Reiki master and Qigong trainer. She is also certified in vibrational healing training with singing bowls.
Healthy Desserts – Whether you are watching your waistline, managing diabetes, or trying to lower cholesterol, there is always room for something sweet yet healthy in your diet. This one-session course will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. (refer to CRN 11689); course fee is $50. The instructor is Chef Joshua Ogrodowski, who holds a bachelor of science degree in culinary nutrition and a master of arts in teaching foodservice education from Johnson and Wales University. Students will learn to make healthier soufflés, including chocolate and hot maple, energizing banana nut bars and power biscotti, gluten and lactose-free cakes, streusels and even cheesecake. Other specialty dessert items will include low-fat dark fudge brownies, tofu chocolate silk mousse and orange panna cotta.
