Manchester, Connecticut- (January 30, 2012) Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has declared February to be American Heart Month in order to draw attention to heart disease.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and is a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the U.S. is coronary heart disease. Taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at risk for heart disease can reduce the chances of developing heart disease. A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons.
Manchester Community College is offering a series of credit free courses through Continuing Education on ways to adopt a healthier lifestyle:
Fact versus Fiction: What Foods are right for you?: Separate fact from fiction regarding a non-inflammatory diet, what are “good carbs”, which protein is helpful, how much fiber your diet should include and what fats are needed for a healthy body. 1 Thursday, 3/29, 7-9 pm Instructor: Dr. Marie Mammone Fee: $20
Culinary Herbs for Good Health :The focus will be on culinary herbs that can be used to provide flavor to food dishes and help digestion. The history of herbs will be covered as well as medicinal values and some recipes.1 Thursday, 4/19, 7-9 pm. Instructor: Dr. Marie Mammone

An Enemy of the Heart? Cholesterol and Your Health: Heart disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Is cholesterol the big enemy? Learn cholesterol facts, what cardiovascular disease is all about and what steps you can take in your daily life for a healthier heart.1 Thursday, 4/26,7-9 pm. Instructor: Dr. Marie Mammone Fee: $20
Organic Vegetable Gardening: This class will discuss various forms of vegetable gardens, selecting crops for a site, soil and light, needs for various fruits and vegetables, and the best time of year to plant each of these. Crop rotation and season extenders will also be included. All methods discussed will be from an organic perspective. 5 Wednesdays, 2/29-3/28, 6:30-8:30 pm. Instructor: Bettylou Sandy Fee: $105
American Red Cross Standard First Aid with AED and CPR
Required for most sports coaches, this course gives students the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, and to provide basic care for injuries and sudden illness for adults. The course includes training on the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Upon successful completion of course requirements, students will receive certification in both Adult CPR/AED and Standard First Aid. 2 Thursdays, 3/1-3/8, 6-10 p.m. Fee: $95 Instructor: Ezequiel (Memo) Alejandro has been a certified American Red Cross instructor for more than 25 years.
