MCC Men’s Soccer Team Wins Big
MANCHESTER, CT – (September 30) Mariusz Kurzatkowski (Southington) scored three times and Jemmy Cange (Norwich) twice as MCC beat MassBay CC 8-3 in Manchester on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars spotted MassBay a goal on a defensive breakdown 43 seconds into the game, but recovered with a pair of goals two minutes apart just past the midway mark in the first half and never looked back.
Trailing 1-0, Defender Dennis Cartier (Middletown) was the catalyst as MCC four times over a 14 minute span and took a 4-1 lead into halftime. Cartier sent Kurzatkowski in on a breakaway, setting up the team’s leading scorer for his first of three goals, then scored his first goal of the season off a Cange pass when he jumped into the offense, giving MCC the lead to stay.
Kurzatkowski now has 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points while Cange follows with 24 points on ten goals and four assists.
“We made a mistake in the backfield and started off slowly and we paid for it,” MCC Coach Jim Insinga said of the early deficit. “Once we settled into the game and scored our first goal, then took the lead, they became more defensive minded and then we pushed up and became too strong for them.”
MCC, ranked #9 in the NJCAA Division III poll, remains undefeated at home (4-0) and improves to 7-2 overall. The Cougars face a tough out-of-region opponent on Wednesday (October 1) when Ulster County (Stone Ridge, NY) CC visits for a game originally scheduled to be played at Cheney Tech. The game has been moved to Loomis Chaffe School on Batchelder Rd. in Windsor and will begin at 4pm.
Dennis Boateng (East Hartford) scored his third goal of the year and Terrence Thomas (West Haven) scored his first. Sel Velic (Hartford), Kurzatkowski and Boateng also had assists. Jason Walker (Windsor) had a pair of assists.
“They are an improved team from the last time we played them,” Insinga said of MassBay, who the Cougars beat 7-0 ten days ago in Wellesely, MA. Paul White scored a pair of second half goals for MassBay (0-6). Carlos Fontoura scored the visitor’s first goal and goakeeper David Stone made 17 saves in the loss.
