MCC Men Win Big; Shut Out #4 Ranked Team in the Nation 7-0
MANCHESTER, CT – Jemmy Cange (Norwich) scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Manchester Community College routed Bristol (MA) CC 7-0 Saturday afternoon in Manchester. It was the sixth straight shutout and eighth straight victory for the 13-2 Cougars. MCC, who was ranked ninth in the most recent NJCAA Division III Poll is unbeaten in seven home games. Bristol, the #4 team in the nation coming into the game, drops to 11-5.
Maiusz Kurzatkowski (Southington) scored the first two goals of the game 32 and 38 minutes into the game as MCC took a 2-0 lead at the half. Kurzatkowski has 17 goals on the year while Cange leads the team with 19. The MCC defense kept the NJCAA Division III leading goal scorer goal scorer, Jason Couto (31) off the board. Jason Walker (Windsor, 9th) , Frank Busumbru (Manchester, 4th) and Terence Thomas (West Haven, 2nd) also scored for the Cougars.
“We stayed back in a 4-5-1 and we settled into the game because they have a potential All-American up front in Jason Couto and they have another top midfielder in Kyle Lopes,” MCC Head Coach Jim Insinga said. “We wanted to watch those two guys, see have they interacted and then deny them the ball.”
Jeff Gregor (Newington) made four saves over the first 65 minutes before giving way to Hami Kara (Wethersfield) who made one save the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
“We just kept trying to get the ball deep on to the back line and slide the ball to Jemmy or whoever was in front of the goal,” Insinga said. “This is the transition game for us. The number four team in the country, the number one team in New England supposedly and we just took them apart.”
MCC lost to Bristol 4-3 in Fall River, MA in its season opener on August 30 but rebounded by winning 13 of its next 14 games including three against Division I opponents.
