MCC Graduates 737 at 46th Annual Commencement Ceremony
Manchester, Conn., – (May 28, 2010)… Seven hundred and ninety-four degrees were awarded to 737 graduates at Manchester Community College’s 46th annual commencement ceremony held on Thursday, May 27. Graduates from 84 towns across Connecticut and eight other states were awarded associate in science degrees, associate in art degrees and certificates. The youngest graduate was 18 years old and the oldest was 69.
Mikhail E. Markov, of Windsor, was the 2010 valedictorian, earning an associate in science degree in accounting and business administration. The salutatorian was Benjamin Ho Kyung Harvey, of East Hartford. Harvey was awarded an associate in science degree in criminal justice. During his address, Markov recounted his experience at MCC and encouraged graduates to remember their time at MCC. “We will all embark on a new journey to a new destination, and the path for each of us will be different,” exclaimed Markov. “We must not forget the people we met, the experiences we had, and the skills we got at MCC.”
State Senator Mary Ann Handley delivered the commencement address. Senator
Handley serves the 4th Senatorial District representing Bolton, Glastonbury, Manchester
and Marlborough. As a retired history professor of 30 years at Manchester Community
College, Senator Handley has long been a strong advocate for the improvement and
expansion of higher education in the State.
Dr. Marie S. Spivey received the honorary degree of associate in humane letters, honoris causa. Dr. Spivey is an administrator of allied health and nursing initiatives for Capital Workforce Partners, vice chair of the Great Path Academy Governing Board, and former member of the Connecticut Community-Technical Colleges Board of Trustees.
Other awards that were presented during the ceremony include the Board of Trustees’ Merit Award, which was presented to American Eagle Federal Credit Union for their commitment and service to MCC.
The Regional Advisory Council’s Community Service Award was presented to Lisa Turcotte, of Coventry, for her service to the College. Turcotte was awarded an associate in science degree in disabilities specialist.
Iren Muzsi, of Vernon, received the President’s Student Award. She earned an associate in science degree in manufacturing engineering science. The President’s Student Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated unusual perseverance in spite of difficulties, obstacles or challenges.
