MCC Credit-Free Programs Offers Courses to Help with Holiday Prep
Manchester, Conn. (September 20, 2017) – As the holiday season approaches, Manchester Community College’s credit-free courses can help you entertain guests like a pro.
Learn how to make greeting cards rather than buying them this holiday season. A three-session course, “Custom-Made Greeting Cards for the Holidays,” will cover rubber stamping, embossing and paper crafting techniques with instructor Lisa Korstanje-Lee, a seasoned MCC credit-free crafts instructor. The course meets for three successive Wednesdays, November 1, 8 and 15, from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. By the end of the course, students will have made 20 holiday cards and envelopes, and some other gift items as well. Help bring in the holiday season with a course on making favorite pies. “Thanksgiving Pies” will be held Saturday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to make homemade apple and pumpkin pie, and orange cranberry biscotti. Instructor Anita Ferron is a family and consumer sciences teacher, has a bachelor of science degree in home economics and has studied in culinary programs internationally. Instructor Bob Buettner, who owns and operates East Hartford-based Paul Buettner Florist, will teach three floral design courses: “Decorative Centerpiece for All Occasions,” Monday, November 6, from 7 to 9 p.m.; “Vase Arrangements,” Monday, November 13, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and “Decorative Centerpiece for Thanksgiving,” Monday, November 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. To register, refer to CRN’s 31448, 31449 and 31450, respectively.
Select appropriate wines for a variety of holiday meals and occasions from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Enroll in “Handling the Holidays…with Wine!” The course meets Friday, November 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. Instructor Leanne Wheeler, a certified American Wine Society judge, will provide tips on wine tasting, buying, serving temperatures, storage, and more. Manchester Community College also offers degrees and certificates in culinary arts and hospitality management, and hotel-tourism management.
