MCC Credit-Free Programs Offers Accelerated CNA Course

Manchester, Conn. (June 16, 2016) – Manchester Community College’s Continuing Education division offers the Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) Training Program as part of its Summer 2016 catalog offerings.

The 120-hour class starts June 27 and meets every week until August 1. It includes on-campus classroom work and clinical work at one of MCC’s off-site healthcare partners. The fee is $999. For more information about the schedule, other pre-requisites or to register, call 860-512-2826; email Elaine Wiatr at ewiatr@manchestercc.edu; or download the catalog at https://www.manchestercc.edu/cfcatalog.

Students will need to obtain the Hartman’s Nursing Assistant Care Third Edition textbook by Hedman, Fuzy & Rymer (ISBN 9781604250411) and workbook (ISBN 9781604250428), approximate cost $75. Students must also purchase a gait belt — approximate cost $12 — available at the MCC bookstore.

The course is taught by one of the best CNA instructors in the area, JoAnn Thulin, APRN (advanced practice registered nurse). Thulin has worked in the healthcare field in a variety of capacities, including long-term care, critical care and the corporate sector. She is a retired acting director of Nursing Services for Westside Care Center/Victorian Heights in Manchester. She graduated from Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse, and from Hartford Hospital School of Adult Medicine Nurse Practitioners as a licensed APRN.

In addition to her years of nursing experience, Thulin is a volunteer for the Manchester Area Conference of Churches shelter, the Manchester Garden Club and the South United Methodist Church as a parish nurse and member of the choir.

She is also a long-time supporter of the college, serving as a member of the MCC Foundation Board. In 2015, the college’s occupational therapy lab was dedicated to Thulin and her husband, Robert, to honor them for their significant donation to support MCC’s Allied Health program.

This non-credit CNA certificate course prepares students with the entry-level skills needed to work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, clinics and home health agencies. The CNA provides basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff. Those who successfully complete the course will be qualified for a paying position and can then go on to pursue a degree or higher level certification through one of MCC’s Health Careers programs.

Degrees in radiation therapy, respiratory care, and health and exercise science, as well as dental assistant and disabilities specialist certificates are available. These programs prepare students for entry-level positions in their fields or allow them to transfer to other institutions to further their education.
