MCC Blanks Holyoke CC 5-0 in Region XXI Tournament Opener

MANCHESTER, CT – (October 25) – Jemmy Cange (Norwich) scored four times as MCC shut out Holyoke CC 5-0 in the opening round of the NJCAA Division III Region XXI Tournament Saturday afternoon in Manchester.

The Cougars (16-2) will face Bunker Hill CC for the Division III Region XXI Championship Sunday afternoon at MCC with the winner moving on to host the District Championship game on Satuday, November 1. Bunker Hill (11-7-1) beat Bristol CC 2-1 in the second game of the tournament Saturday afternoon. Bristol closes out the season with a 11-6 record while Holyoke’s season ends with an 8-7-1 record.

Cange, who had his second consecutive four-goal game and third of the season, finished the regular season with 24 goals and now holds MCC’s single season scoring record with 28. Cange broke the previous mark of 26 set by Fotis Anastasiou in 2002 with his third goal of the afternoon five minutes into the second half. The Haiti native and 2006 NJCAA All-New England selection scored twenty minutes into the game on a Frank Busumbru (Manchester) pass, then gave MCC a 2-0 halftime lead when he drill a penalty kick by Holyoke goalkeeper Josh Croake.

Joe Danso’s (West Haven) tenth goal of the year closed out the scoring with 12 minutes to play. Busmbru picked up a pair of assists on Cange goals, his second came in the 68th minute as MCC took a 4-0 lead.

Jeff Gregor (Newington) played the first 70 minutes and Hami Kara (Wethersfield) the final 20 to keep the shutout intact.
