MCC Baseball Team Wins Fifth Straight Game
MANCHESTER – (April 9, 2008) Manchester Community College broke a 3-2 game open with five runs in the sixth inning and cruised to its fifth straight win Wednesday afternoon at McCormick Complex, beating CCRI 8-2.
Alan Fredriksson (Torrington) was 3 for 4 with three runs scores and two RBI. MCC’s leadoff hitter and shortstop is hitting .479 (23 for 48) with 22 runs scored and 10 driven in through 14 games.
MCC starter Mike Quagliaroli (Windsor Locks) pitched five strong innings to pick up the win. The right-hander scattered four hits, struck out four and left after Pedro Acevedo (New Britain) made an outstanding grab on a ball heading into the gap to end CCRI’s fifth inning, Quagliaroli’s only 1-2-3 inning on the day.
Dan Nelson (Glastonbury) pitched the final four innings, striking out six, to earn the save.
MCC (11-2-1) held a 3-1 advantage in the sixth inning, but CCRI’s Stefan Wagner hit an opposite field, two-out solo home run to cut the Cougar lead to 3-2. Nelson was not phased, and allowed just one hit the rest of the way – a wind blown fungo-double that dropped five feet from home plate. He walked two batters and hit another to load to the bases with one out in the eighth, but left them stranded with a pop up and a strikeout.
Dan Angelillo (Wethersfield) was 2 for 4 including a two-run single in the five-run sixth. Brian Hager (Burlington) was 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a well placed sacrifice bunt in the fifth. Derek Grundmann (Colchester) tripled in the seventh.
MCC is scheduled to play double headers at home on Saturday April 12 vs. Roxbury CC and on Sunday April 13th vs. Bunker Hill CC. Both are Region XXI opponents.
