MCC Announces Fall 2017 Scholarship Recipients

Manchester, Conn. (May 24, 2017) – Manchester Community College Foundation awarded a total of more than $106,000 in scholarship funding for the Fall 2017 semester. The scholarship presentation was held Tuesday evening, May 23, in the SBM Charitable Foundation Auditorium. A reception followed for the recipients and their families.

The student speaker was Huma Naeem, of Manchester, who received a scholarship from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Naeem, who came to the United States in 2010 from Pakistan, thanked donors for enabling her to pursue her dreams after she realized that education is the best source of empowerment not only for social reasons but also for financial and professional reasons.

“I belong to a culture where gender inequality is one of the highest in the world,” she said. “Women occupy really low status as compared to men.” Today, with the support of MCC and scholarship donors, she expects to graduate next spring.

“It is not easy to fight every day but looking forward to the shining bright future does not allow me to look back,” she said.

MCC Foundation gives hundreds of deserving students the opportunity to achieve their academic dreams through the scholarship program. In addition, the foundation supports college programs.
