MCC Advances To Region 21 Final On PKs

Chris Hayes Shuts The Door On MassBay With Season On The Line

SOMERVILLE, MA – Chris Hayes (East Windsor) took over for injured goalkeeper Tony Ettorre (Plainville) in a 0-0 game with 8:01 left in regulation, then shut down MassBay CC through two overtimes and a Penalty Kick round as the Cougars advance to Sunday’s NJCAA Region 21 Championship game vs. Bunker Hill CC at 1PM.

Hayes saved two PKs while Eric Trazinski (East Granby), Tony Scotti (Bristol) Giuseppe Panajia (Glastonbury) and Zach Simmons (Coventry) converted penalty kicks for MCC.

“We just held on,” MCC head coach Jim Insinga said. “This MassBay team was just excellent. We had to work hard all the way through. And Chris Hayes just stepped up and made two fantastic saves.”

Bunker Hill CC (7-4) beat Springfield Tech (4-8-1) 6-2 in Saturday’s other semi-final game. MCC and Bunker Hill split a pair of 1-0 decisions during the regular season with each team winning on the road. Sunday’s championship game will played at neutral Dilboy Stadium.

Ettorre was taken from the field by ambulance with a head injury after colliding with a MassBay player after making eight saves, but was expected to be released from a local hospital later Saturday evening.

“Losing Tony was an emotional thing and it took us a while to adjust and they were playing for him all the way through,” Insinga said. “It looked like a serious, serious injury. We were pretty nervous, he wasn’t moving for quite a while.”

Hayes, who missed time with a shoulder injury during the season, played just 53 minutes over three games this fall. He is the likely starter in the championship game.

“Coming off this win, we are so pumped with adrenaline,” Hayes said. “We are going to go hard at them tomorrow and give them a run for their money.”
