Enfield’s Kevin Battista, East Hartford’s Daniel Boateng and Manny Nanadoum (Naugatuck) scored as Manchester CC beat Bunker Hill CC 3-0 in Manchester Saturday.
Hami Kara (Wethersfield) made six saves over 77 minutes and Tony Ettorre (Plainville) made one over the final 13 minutes as Manchester (5-0) completed its third shutout of the week over NJCAA Region 21 opponents. Kara also assisted on Nanadoum’s goal.
“We had just two mistakes in the backfield that could have cost us,” MCC Head Coach Jim Insinga said. “You can’t ask for more. We recovered from both and that preserved the shutout.”
Sophomore defender Ken Rossignol (Manchester) played an outstanding game, capped off by a goal-saving play with three minutes to play.
“Kenny cleaned the goal out,” Insinga said. “Our goalkeeper came out and got caught up and the goal was wide open and Kenny cleaned it out with the ball traveling in.”
The Cougar defense, led by sophomores Kara and Rossignol has been rock-solid, allowing just one goal over five games.
“We have size and speed,” Kara said. “And Kenny, every single game he just steps it up more and more. We are really starting to lock down and nothing is going to get by us.”
Kara, who was a back-up to NJCAA All-American Jeff Gregor a year ago, is making a strong case for recognition on the national level in his second season at MCC. The former Connecticut All-State player assisted on Nanadoum’s goal late in the first half and started the play that led to the Battista’s goal with a pass to Bryant Bermudez (East Hartford).
Boateng put the game away with a header at the left side of the Bunker Hill (3-3) net off a Giuseppe Panajia (Glastonbury) serve in the game’s 60th minute to give MCC a commanding 3-0 lead. Boateng also had an assist on Battista’s goal, which was the first of the game.
MCC hosts MassBay CC on Tuesday. Game time is 4PM.
