Institute on Disability and Community Inclusion Recognizes Individuals for Service

The Manchester Community College (MCC) Institute on Disability and Community Inclusion hosted its annual Rosemary and Gunnar Dybwad seminar and award ceremony in April. This year’s recipients of the Rosemary and Gunnar Dybwad award were Kathleen Dalton of Newington and Sue Roberts of Portland. The MCC Police Department was also recognized and the recipient of the second Dr. Jonathan M. Daube Award for Inclusion and Accessibility.

The focus of the Rosemary and Gunnar Dywad seminar is advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. This year’s seminar featured Jamie Lazaroff, sports commentator and public speaker, and highlighted the world of sports and people with disabilities.

The Dr. Jonathan M. Daube Award for Inclusion and Accessibility was established to honor an outstanding member of the MCC community who exemplifies the legacy of inclusion and accessibility exercised by Dr. Daube during his years of leadership as president of MCC.

The MCC Police Department was honored for their consistent concerns and efforts to make the MCC campus a safe place and for their positive and welcoming interaction with everyone, including people with disabilities.

Established in 1992, the MCC Institute on Disability and Community Inclusion is a cooperative institute that works to eliminate negative attitudes towards children and adults with disabilities. The Institute conducts conferences, seminars and think tank sessions, and augments the book, journal, video and computer holdings of the MCC library. Visiting scholars programs, focused research projects, and visits by international leaders help to present new stories and research that will reduce fear and misunderstanding concerning the inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into everyday community life.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. MCC is situated on a park-like campus and is easily accessible from I-84.
