Grundmann and Acevedo Homer in 8-7 MCC Win
MANCHESTER – (APRIL 23, 2008) Jeff Raymond (Hebron) gave up three runs and scattered six hits over seven innings as MCC defeated Holyoke 8-7 Wednesday afternoon at McCormick Complex. It was the first Region XXI, Division III loss for Holyoke.
Homeruns by Derek Grundmann (Colchester) and Pedro Acevedo (New Britain) gave Manchester an 8-0 lead after five innings, but Holyoke scratched back with seven runs over the final four innings and had the tying run on first basein the ninth. Liam Ohlmann (Wallingford/Choate) recorded the final three outs to pick up his first save of the year.
MCC is now 10-3 in Region XXI, Division III action with one game (at Quinsigamond Thursday) to play while Holyoke remains in the top slot with an 8-1 record in the division and 19-15 overall.
Raymond (6-0) struck out three and issued an uncharacteristic three walks – he had only walked two batters over 28 innings so far this season – but did not allow a run through the first five innings and retired the side in order in the third.
Grundmann, who also doubled and scored in the third, has been on an extra-base hit binge of late. Five of his last six hits have gone for extra bases with hit two homeruns, two triples and a double in his last four games. Grundmann is 6 for 13 with five runs scored and four RBI in the four games and leads the team with five triples.
Acevedo added a single and a run scored to his first homerun, which was carved the opposite way, over the fence in right field with Grundmann on base in the fourth inning. Rob Bukowski (Wallingford) drove in the first two runs of the game with a double in the first inning. Alan Fredrikkson (Torrington) was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
