Great Path Academy Announces Presidential Scholars

Manchester, CT – (June 11, 2013)…Great Path Academy, a middle college high school at Manchester Community College is proud to announce five recipients of the Presidential Scholar Award among the graduating Class of 2013.
This year, Great Path Academy has two valedictorians, Kaylea Elliot of Manchester and Jamie Grennan of Coventry. The two were tied for highest class ranking, based upon their grade point averages. Kaylea Elliot will be attending UConn and aspires to be a doctor. Jamie Grennan is attending the University of Vermont with a focus on Religious Studies.
Great Path Academy’s 2013 salutatorian, Shakira Lugo of Hartford, was also awarded a Presidential Scholarship. Shakira Lugo will be attending UConn and plans on majoring in Psychology and minoring in Criminal Justice, with an end result of heading to law school.
Sophia Logan of Vernon, another of Great Path Academy’s top scholars and Steven Paredes, of Hartford, were also awarded Presidential Scholarships. Sophia Logan will be attending Springfield College and Steven Parades will be attending University of Hartford in the fall and plans on studying with a focus in Criminal Justice.
The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to students who excel in academics, placing them in the top tiers of their school. If a student is a valedictorian or salutatorian, they can apply for this very generous scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship covers a majority of their college tuition in one case and all of their college tuition in the other four cases.
“The academic achievement of these five young adults is a credit to the inter-district magnet high school and speaks to the high expectations that are in place on the campus. Great Path Academy’s attributes of Respect, Responsibility and Safety are visible in achievements of students such as these,” stated GPA Principal Tory Niles-Outler.
Kaylea Elliot looks back on her years at Great Path Academy as ones that prepared her for college. “The small environment at Great Path Academy led to more opportunities and doors opening for me,” Kaylea reflects. “The exposure to college classes prepared me and gave me a leg up in my application process. My guidance counselors worked hard with my parents and the school to help find every opportunity available to me. My experience here can be summed up in three words; hard-working, well-supported and preparation-filled.”
Great Path Academy is an inter-district magnet school managed by Hartford Public Schools. The middle college high school format provides students with an accelerated program through which they may enroll in up to eight credits per semester in direct college classes. Over the past three years, 97% of Great Path Academy students have graduated and enrolled in post-secondary education.
Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The college offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. The main, park-like campus, which is easily accessible from I-84, is also the home of Great Path Academy, a middle college high school, serving grades 9-12. The college’s second location, the Manchester Community College Arts and Education Center, opened in downtown Manchester in 2012.
