Diana Hossain Receives Educational Excellence and Distinguished Service Award

Diana Hossain Selected as MCC’s Educational Excellence and Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Manchester, CT…. (November 1, 2010) Bolton resident Diana Hossain, Professor of English as a Second Language and Spanish at Manchester Community College, has been selected to receive the MCC Educational Excellence and Distinguished Service Award for 2010.

The MCC Educational Excellence and Distinguished Service Award is awarded annually to a full- time faculty or staff member with ten years of service. Faculty and staff can apply or be nominated by their colleagues.

Professor Hossain was recognized for her work on peace and conflict issues. She currently teaches a course at MCC entitled,” Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies.”

This past summer she began training in Kingian Nonviolence, which is a certificate program based on the conflict reconciliation philosophy of Martin Luther King, Jr. After completion of her work, she will be a certified trainer in Kingian Nonviolence. Her hope is to bring back this knowledge to the college to students, faculty and staff.

She will also be attending the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. The two- week program brings together educators from around the world to plan and develop instructional methods in peace education.

Promoting a culture of peace in the classroom is a personal goal. She is planning on adding materials on peace and conflict issues to the library and to the classroom. Software, videos, and books that focus on issues of conflict resolution, human rights, reconciliation, nonviolent struggle, negative and positive peace, environmental and ecological sustainability, disarmament, and world government will be made available to all students who express an interest in these issues.
