Cougars take two from Massasoit CC in Region 21 action

BROCKTON, MA – (April 17, 2009) MCC snapped its four game losing streak and recovered from an embarrassing loss on Friday with a double header sweep of NJCAA Region 21 Division III rival Massasoit CC Saturday afternoon in Brockton, MA.

Mike Quagliaroli (Windsor Locks) pitched a complete game in the Cougars 11-2 win in game one while Dan Nelson (Glastonbury) and Tyler Wenz (Ogdensburg, NJ) combined for a 7-6 victory in game two.

A.J. Lowers (Newington) caught both games and was 4 for 8 on the afternoon with an rbi triple in the second game. Vin Sommo (Clinton) was 2 for 3 with four rbis, including a three-run homer in game one, then added a double in game two.

Nick Melino (Cromwell) had a big afternoon at the plate with five hits in eight at-bats with three runs scored and an rbi. Herb Coggshall (Coventry) also contributed to the 18 MCC runs with four hits in six trips and three rbis. Dave Alexander (Torrington) and Juan Bisono (New Britain) were both 2 for 4. Alexander drove in three runs and Bisono drove in a pair.

Quagliaroli struck out five and did not allow an earned run while Nelson picked up his third win of the season with help from Wenz, who closed the door on Massasoit’s comeback – Manchester held a 7-0 lead after three innings – with his team leading sixth save.

MCC is 13-12-1 overall and 4-2 in Region 21, Division III play. Massasoit drops to 15-12 overall and 4-4 within the division. The Cougars complete their five-game, Region 21 Division III road trip Sunday afternoon with a double header against Bunker Hill CC in Boston starting at noon.
