MCC Baseball Weekend Round-up

Cougars Swept in Jersey, Long Island

The road was not kind to the Manchester CC baseball team this past weekend.

The Cougars dropped doubleheaders to 2010 NJCAA Division III National Champions on Saturday 1-0 (8 innings) and 7-4 in Sewell, NJ and on Sunday to Suffolk CC (3-0, 11-3) in Suffern, NY.

MCC took a scoreless tie into an extra frame in Saturday’s first game, but gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, spoiling another outstanding effort turned in by Kevin Madera (Newington). The lefty, who was an All-American first team selection a year ago when he won the NJCAA DIII ERA title, scattered six hits over seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts and just two walks. Madera (0-1) has pitched 16 innings in three starts so far this season, and has not allowed an earned run while striking out 22 batters.

“We did get 20 hits in the two games,” MCC head coach Chris Strahowski said after the Sunday setbacks. “But we just weren’t able to bunch them together or get a big hit to break through early in either game.”

After playing eight home games on the synthetic turf at Cheney Tech, the Cougars return to campus for their first Region 21 game Tuesday, March 22 at 3:30pm when Quinsigamond visits.
