Cougars make it six straight — all on the road –in 6-5, Region 21 win over Quinsigamond

Worcester, MA – (April 23, 2009) Tyler Wenz (Ogdensburg, NJ) picked up his first win of the season in his first collegiate start as MCC won for the sixth straight time, edging Qiunisgamond 6-5 Thursday afternoon in Worcester.

Steve Simon (Middlefield) notched his second save of the season with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning. Simon, who was working between starts, stranded the tying run at third base with a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 count in the bottom of final frame.

Wenz (1-4), who leads the Cougars (17-12-1) with five saves, gave up just two runs on a pair of wind-blown, solo homers over five innings.

MCC’s leading hitter Nick Melino (Cromwell/.361) had a pair of hits including hit his first homerun of the season while Vin Sommo (Clinton) continued to swing a hot bat with three hits and a run scored.

Herb Coggeshall (Coventry) went over the .300 mark (.309) with three hits in four at-bats. The center-fielder drove in a pair of runs and hit the first of back-to-back rbi doubles, preceding Juan Bisono (New Britain), in MCC’s four run fourth.

MCC is now 7-2 in Region 21, Division III games.

Manchester’s six consecutive victories have all come on the road where the team will stay for the weekend. The Cougars travel to MassBay CC (Framingham, MA) on Saturday for a pair of NJCAA Region 21 Division III games then go to Groton on Sunday for a pair against UConn-Avery Point. The Cougars return home for the first time in 18 days on Tuesday when NJCAA Division I Monroe College comes to town.
