College President Named Head of Scottish University Trust

Dr. Jonathan M. Daube

New York, NY – March 26, 2007 . . . Dr. Jonathan M. Daube, President of Manchester (CT) Community College, was elected President of the Board of Directors of the University of Aberdeen Development Trust USA (UADT USA) at the organization’s annual meeting held last week.

The mission of the University of Aberdeen Development Trust USA is to bring together graduates and friends of the University of Aberdeen who give of their time and experience to encourage and facilitate support from the United States. It accomplishes this by supporting the mission of the University of Aberdeen, encouraging communications among US-based graduates, enabling alumni to continue their affiliation with their alma mater, and soliciting and receiving gifts for educational purposes from US donors. The Trust also makes grants and gifts to specific projects such as equipment and educational buildings, library resources, scholarship assistance and research at the University of Aberdeen and collaborating universities, and promotes and funds scholarly exchange between the University of Aberdeen and American universities and other academic institutions. Dr. Daube is a founding member of the Trust and has served as both its Treasurer and Secretary.

Lori Manders, the University of Aberdeen’s Director of Development and External Affairs, welcomed Dr Daube’s appointment, “On behalf of the University, I’m delighted at the election of Dr. Daube as President of the Board of the University of Aberdeen Development Trust USA. Jonathan has been a long-serving member of the US Development Trust, and we look forward to working with him on projects to reach out to our alumni community in the United States.”

As President of the Board of Directors, Dr. Daube is responsible for overseeing a small board and for furthering the mission and purpose of the UADT USA, fostering links with members of the University of Aberdeen community and creating links with University alumni, the American-Scottish community, business, foundations, and the general public; securing and managing gifts and making grants; contributing to the Trust’s organization and planning; monitoring its finances; and recruiting new members.

“The University of Aberdeen, many, many years ago, provided an environment for me to ‘grow up’ in. I am still grateful to many people for allowing this to happen; it is time to pay it back. I look forward to promoting the Scottish connection with Connecticut and the whole country,” stated Dr. Daube.

Dr. Daube has been President of Manchester Community College, Connecticut’s largest community college, since 1987. Before that, he was President of Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, for nine years. Born in Cambridge, England, he attended Aberdeen Grammar School before entering the University of Aberdeen at the age of fifteen. He graduated with a degree in English, and went on to the Institute of Education at the University of London.

After two years as a teacher at Watford Boys’ Grammar School and three years at The Manchester (UK) Grammar School, Dr. Daube moved to the United States in 1963, and earned his doctorate from Harvard University. He subsequently spent two years teaching at the University of Malawi in southern Africa.

Dr. Daube has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and has served as a visiting member of the editorial board of the Hartford Courant, America’s oldest continually published newspaper. He has also served as a member of the Board of Electors of the Wadsworth Atheneum, America’s oldest public art museum, and is a Corporator of the Eastern Connecticut Health Network, Inc. In Fall 2002, he spent a ten-week sabbatical as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Education at the University of London, where he had trained as a teacher some decades before. He is currently a member of the adjunct faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he teaches a graduate-level course on community colleges.

Dr. Daube’s father David became the University of Aberdeen’s first Professor of Jurisprudence in the early fifties, before moving to Oxford as Regius Professor of Civil Law and Fellow of All Souls College. He and his brothers recently donated their father’s papers to the University of Aberdeen.

Established in 1994, the University of Aberdeen Development Trust USA is an independent not-for-profit corporation registered in the US as a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to charitable and educational programs. The trust was established with the blessing of the University and, historically, virtually all of its support has gone to making grants for research, student support, expanding learning facilities and resources, and contributing to building conservation and construction at the University of Aberdeen.
