Chinese Educators Visit Manchester Community College

Educators From The People’s Republic of China Visit Manchester Community College

Fourteen educators from the Jilin province in the People’s Republic of China visited Manchester Community College on Thursday, October 20, 2011, to learn more about the community college concept, our high school partnerships and transition-to-college programs.

The visit was sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Schools who hosted the delegation representing several municipal institutes of education – which are China’s closest equivalent to the United States’ community and technical colleges – as well as elementary, middle and high schools.

Representatives from various areas of Manchester Community College presented an overview of the national community college landscape, including the open admissions concept, as well as specific information on Connecticut’s community college system, enrollment trends and best practices in working with high school partners.

Information was presented on the College Career Pathways Program, High School Partnership Program, the College Access Challenge Grants and Summer Bridge Programs with a focus on ways to prepare high school students for college. Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodrigues, Principal of Great Path Academy, then explained the concept of the middle college high school. The delegation also took part in luncheon and a campus tour.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. MCC is situated on a park-like campus and is easily accessible from I-84.
