Cange Delivers, Gregor Saves
Sophomores Lead MCC in 1-0 Victory Over Bunker Hill CC
MANCHESTER, CT – (October 10) Sophomore Jemmy Cange (Norwich) scored the lone goal seven and a half minutes into the second half and Jeff Gregor (Newington) made nine saves in MCC’s 1-0 victory over Division III Region XXI rival Bunker Hill in Manchester Friday afternoon.
It was the fifth straight win for MCC who improves to 10-2 on the season. Bunker Hill, who beat the Cougars in Boston on September 21, drops to 7-5. Cange has a team leading 14 goals.
Mariusz Kurzatkowski (Southington) set up the game winning goal with a cross from the corner, breaking the scoreless tie.
“We’ve been practicing that play all along,” MCC Coach Jim Insinga said after the game. “We try to move the ball in close, cross the ball and finish.”
At the other end, Gregor played an aggressive game and moved the ball down field quickly in the Cougars third straight shutout victory. MCC has won nine of its last ten games, eight by shutout.
“They had a lot of power up front, but our defense pretty much isolated them,” Gregor said. “Fetzer had a great game, stopping everything that came by.”
Defenders Austin Fetzer (Hebron) and Dennis Cartier (Middletown) took a lot of heat in front of Gregor breaking up dozens of potential threats from the Bunker Hill eleven. “Fetzer and Dennis Cartier were just magnificent today,” Insinga said.
Insinga had high praise for his formidable opponent. “They have some dangerous players – an All-American up front in Mohamed Saeed who is just a tremendous player,” Insinga said. “We had our hands full with him all day long and it was a very close game.”
“They just couldn’t find the ball through,” Gregor observed. “As soon as they got the ball, we had pressure on them right away.”
Gregor had both posts and a defender working for him on one Bunker Hill shot late in the game that nearly found its way into the net. “I thought it was going in,” Gregor said. “I heard a ding and jumped right up, but Sal or Sel (twin brothers Velic), one of them kicked the ball out.”
