Bunker Hill Makes One Stick; Hands MCC First Home Divison Loss IN Three Years
Men’s Soccer:
Bunker Hill CC 1 Manchester CC 0
MANCHESTER – Majid Saeed scored 17 minutes into the game to give Bunker Hill CC (6-4) a 1-0 Region 21, Division III victory Saturday afternoon over Manchester CC. Marion Quijada picked up the assist on the shot from close range that barely eluded the fingers of a diving Tony Ettorre (Plainville), who made six saves in the losing cause.
“We have been going back and forth with these guys over the past decade,” MCC head coach Jim Insinga said. “We missed a couple of shots in the first half and in the second half they tightened the screws on us a little bit.”
The loss was the first at home in a division game for MCC (8-3, 7-1) in nearly three years – Springfield Tech beat the Cougars 2-0 on October 31, 2007 – and snapped a five-game win streak.
“This is our first loss in the conference, but we are still number one,” Insinga said. “They have a couple of losses, so it shouldn’t affect the standings. It’s just a game where we will have to learn a little bit and adjust a little bit and come back and meet these guys in the playoffs for sure.”
Manchester and Bunker Hill traded 1-0 decisions during the regular season with each team winning on the road. The two rivals could meet again on neutral turf in the Region 21 tournament on October 30-31. The four-team, single elimination tournament will be played at iconic Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, MA, home of host Ben Franklin Institute of Technology.
MCC hosts ASA Institute on Monday afternoon at 2PM in a non-Region 21 game.
