African American History Month Celebration at Manchester Community College

Manchester, Connecticut-(January 31, 2012)…In celebration of African American History Month, Manchester Community College has scheduled the following activities during February:

African American Art Exhibit: Works by renowned artists Chotsani E. Dean and Howard el-Yasin. The opening reception will be Thursday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the Hans Weiss Newspace Gallery, SBM Charitable Foundation Building.

Opening Ceremony: Lift Every Voice and Sing; Opening ceremony includes presentation of the second annual Community Leadership Awards; Dr. Deborah Simmons will provide a historical perspective on James Weldon Johnson and the Negro national anthem ”Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Tuesday, February 7 at 12:30 in the Great Path Academy Community Commons.

Film: The Help Set in Mississippi during the 1960’s, Skeeter Phelan, a southern society girl, returns from college and decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. There will be a brief discussion after the film. Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m. in the SBM Charitable Foundation Auditorium.

INROADS Recruiting Workshop: The mission of INROADS is to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. MCC has partnered with this non-profit internship organization to provide opportunities for MCC students. Wednesday, February 15 12:30 p.m. in LRC A 108.

Winter Coat Drive: During the month of February, the Minority Caucus, Office of Minority Student and Mentoring Programs, and the Black Student Union will be collecting winter coats. Clean winter coats can be dropped off at the Office of Minority Student and Mentoring Programs located in Lowe Student Services Center, Room 154.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College.
