MCC Announces Scholarship Awards

MANCHESTER, Conn. (October 28, 2019) – Manchester Community College Foundation awarded a total of nearly $200,000 in scholarships to more than 270 students. A scholarship celebration was held Wednesday evening, October 23, in the SBM Charitable Foundation Auditorium. A reception followed for the recipients and their families.

The student speaker was Cherelle Russell, of East Hartford, who received a Hartford Foundation for Public Giving scholarship. Russell — who credits her ability to stay in college to her scholarship support – shared her story of pursuing an education in the face of tremendous roadblocks. “Some months we were without cable, some months without heat, others without electricity,” she said of her home life growing up.

“Fast forward to my high-school years and we became homeless,” she said. “Fast forward again, and now I’m an adult receiving my second associate degree at MCC due to convenience, location and price.”

She added, “I am now in my second year of the radiography program, and with our vigorous five-day-a-week schedule, it has become almost impossible to work enough to make ends meet. That’s when I decided to fill out my first scholarship.” Without the generosity of scholarship donors, her education would be impossible, she said.

MCC Foundation gives hundreds of deserving students the opportunity to achieve their academic dreams through the scholarship program. Scholarship awards range from $150 to more than $1,000 and are available for both the spring and fall semesters. In addition, the foundation supports college programs.
