MCC Announces Spring 2017 Scholarship Recipients

Manchester, Conn. (December 15, 2016) – Manchester Community College Foundation awarded a total of nearly $100,000 from 63 scholarship funds to more than 150 students for the Spring 2017 semester. The scholarship presentation was held Monday evening, December 12, in the SBM Charitable Foundation auditorium. A reception followed for the recipients and their families.

Alison Knybel, of Tolland, Conn., a recipient of two awards – the Shirley Gustafson Memorial Scholarship and the Hans Weiss Scholarship – spoke at the presentation ceremony and thanked donors.

Knybel came to MCC through the college’s Adults in Transition program, which provides support services for adult learners resuming their educations to advance in current jobs or retrain for new careers. She was working full time, raising a teenage daughter and caring for her aging mother. “Through the support provided through MCC’s programs, professors, staff and students, I have been able to not only succeed, but to excel,” she said. “I am a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and have maintained a GPA of 3.9. I would like to say it was easy, but this is not the case. Over the past two years I have struggled through many classes, I have had financial challenges that made paying tuition difficult, and I lost my beloved mother.” She urged her fellow scholarship winners never to give up.

“No matter what challenges you may face, MCC provides the tools you need to succeed,” she said.

MCC Foundation gives hundreds of deserving students the opportunity to achieve their academic dreams through the scholarship program. In addition, the foundation supports college programs.
