MCC to Host White House Summit on Educational Excellence for African Americans, Dec 5
Manchester, Conn. (November 2, 2016) – Manchester Community College will host the White House Summit for Educational Excellence, an important initiative for college readiness and success, December 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the SBM Charitable Foundation Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required and is limited to the first 250 attendees. Register online at www.manchestercc.edu/whsummit.
The summit is an opportunity to hear first-hand about the experiences of African American students in secondary and post-secondary education and the ways in which they have overcome educational and cultural barriers to achieve success.
In a format designed to provide a platform for African American youth to make their own recommendations on how to raise awareness about the importance of investing in educational excellence, the agenda will spotlight individuals and best practices that successfully support college persistence, completion and graduation. In addition to guest speakers, a series of panel discussions will feature area high school, college and university students.
“It is clear that students’ choices and the opportunities presented to them have a strong impact on their pathways to success in higher education,” G. Duncan Harris, dean of student affairs and enrollment management, said. “This is an excellent opportunity to hear from the experts — our African American students — about how the challenges they have addressed have impacted their educational experience.”
A reception in the SBM Charitable Foundation Building rotunda will immediately follow the event.
