MCC Credit-Free Programs Offers Introduction to Sign Language

Manchester Community College’s Continuing Education division offers the course Introduction to Sign Language as part of its Summer 2016 catalog offerings.

The class will start Tuesday, July 12, and will meet for seven Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. until August 23. The fee is $199. Young adults and adults are welcome.

Students will explore the grammatical features, vocabulary, and expressive and receptive conversational skills of American Sign Language (ASL). They will also consider the culture of the deaf community, a brief history of ASL, and the relationship of ASL to other forms of signing.

The course text is Signing Naturally (Student Workbook, Level 1, Units 1-6) (ISBN 9781581212015), by Smith, Lenz & Mikos, which is available at the MCC bookstore for approximately $95.

MCC Instructor Carolyn Robins is trained in ASL, has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and a graduate degree from Albertus Magnus College. She also has taught Spanish at Berlin High School and East Catholic High School.
